The SF K Files: Goodbye, and thank you!

Over four years ago, in the fall of 2007, I started the kindergarten search for my daughter, who goes by the name Alice on this blog. I was panicked, scared and overwhelmed. I started this blog to organize my feelings around the school process, and soon The SF K Files became a place where parents all over the city were telling their school stories, sharing their heartaches and their joys. In its heyday, the blog was a place filled with thoughtful discourse and parents gave one another a lot of support.

But after a lot of thought, I've decided to shut the blog down. With a full-time job and two kids, I'm unable to give the site the time it deserves.

The old posts and comments will still live here and if you're interested in reading about my search for a school you'll find my complete story here and also in this San Francisco Magazine article. I started my search focusing on private schools but after taking a look at the public options I was pleasantly surprised and I ended up at an up-and-coming Mandarin Immersion school. (Yes, my kids are now speaking Chinese and they absolutely love it!) I don't want my final words on this blog to be telling parents that they must go public but I do want to remind you all that public education is the backbone of our democracy and I hope that skeptical parents will at least give public a chance and tour some schools. I truly believe that as parents we're responsible for all kids in this city, not only our own. And one of the best and easiest ways to touch other kids in a meaningful way is to send your child to a public school.

Finally, I want to sincerely thank you all for contributing to this blog and also many thanks to those of you who cheered me through the process many years ago.

My best to all of you.

Sincerely,

Kate

May Placement Period aka Round 2 Deadline approaching

From http://www.sfusd.edu
If you would like to participate in the May Placement Period, you must submit an Amended Choice Form by April 13th listing any number of more preferred schools than your initial offer for the May Placement Period.
Offers for the May Placement Period will be mailed out on May 11th. You will be notified if an assignment can be offered to one of your amended choices. There will also be a final waiting pool process in August where parents may submit a request for ONE SCHOOL as openings become available prior to the first two weeks of schools’ opening. Parents must submit a choice form for every placement period in which they would like to participate.

The date for Form submission is the same date as the end date for Round 1 school registration.

Are you planning to go into round two?
Did you register at your placement school to hold the spot while waiting for round 2 or even round 3?

Fingers crossed for those of you going into round 2.
