Carlos Garcia and SFUSD Insensitive to LGBT Families

The new 2012-2013 SFUSD application form is now available (download here). I was surprised by Item 8 Parent Educational Level, which has two rows: one labeled “Mother” and one labeled “Father.” It was my understanding that “Mother” and “Father” were to be replaced by gender-neutral terms for parents and partners, such as “Parent 1” and Parent 2,” on all public education documents to acknowledge the rich family diversity in our culturally tolerant City, where two-mom and two-dad households are common (even 2 moms plus 2 dads!).

I hope that SFUSD will remove these archaic family descriptors from the 2012-2013 application form as the first step of demonstrating a welcoming environment for LGBT families.

  1. Good call, Donna.

Seriously, does SFUSD run anything by an outsider before hitting "print"? This is pretty basic stuff for SFUSD (i.e. Parent 1 and Parent 2)

    Shame on them.

  3. Why are you referring to him as "Senor Garcia?" I find this incredibly offensive and cannot read past your racist titles. You might try not alienating your potential audience before you've even made your point.

  5. There is always a father and a mother, that's just biology. Bevan Duffty has a 5-year old daughter and she has a mother, a lesbian who used in-vitro. If you adopt, there is a biological father and mother. The father should have to pay child support to the state. Every child has a mother and father, it's just biology. And don't be racist!

  6. Excuse me, but adoptive parents do not fill out a school enrollment application with the educational level of the biological parents (in some cases this information isn't even known and, quite frankly, not relevant). Same goes for egg donors, sperm donors, etc. Not the info that is going on school enrollment applications. Duh!

  7. Kids may be adopted by an upper class family but disadvantaged by the genetics of a lower income genealogy. I think it is important to give advantage to kids who were adopted by well off parents but whose genetic parents may have disadvantaged them by doing drugs during pregnancy, etc, which most parents without college degrees do, or else alcohol, tobacco, etc. I don't want to see Parent 1 and Parent 2 instead of Mother and Father on the applications, sorry. For 100 families out of 50,000? It undermines traditional families and pushes the bogus idea, disproved by facts, that single mothers can raise kids as well as two involved parents. I'm all for Gay Marriage being legal and voted No on 8, but if there are kids the Butch can put her name under dad and the Femme under mom, or if it's two guys, very rare, the top can put his name under dad and the bottom under mom. If they 69 they can flip a coin. Weren't we promised we wouldn't have to teach our kids about gay stuff if gay marriage passed? I want my kids to see mother and father on the applications thank you very much. Nothing has hurt children over the past 50 years more than single motherhood and it's passive acceptance. I will speak out.

Donna, where/when did you hear that? The form says this particular bit of information (Parent Education Level) “is used for state & federal reporting purposes; it will not affect placement decisions”… so maybe these are archaic state and federal terms, not SFUSD generated descriptors?

  10. 2:57 "the butch can put her name under dad."

I'm laughing over here on that one. Yeah, I know I know....
