Congratulations to all the kids who started school today!

The first day of public school in San Francisco is always a little bittersweet. The parents of those kids who have a spot are always elated but it's always frustrating for those who are still trying to get into their favorite school. Our heart goes out to those of you who are still grappling with the system and all we can say is that it usually works out in the end and hang in there. And to those who started school today (or who returned), congratulations! Here's to another year!

  1. My daughter had her first day of high school at Mission yesterday. I was moved almost to tears last night when she told me that each teacher greeted the students at the door of the classroom and introduced themselves with a handshake. When we stopped at Mitchell's for an ice cream celebration we heard folks telling happy first-day stories about Sunnyside and ran into old friends from Miraloma who are now attending Aptos. Looking back at the journey we have had in San Francisco public schools I can't express how grateful I have been for this community. It hasn't all been wonderful, of course, but we are all enriched by the relationships we have formed with so many talented and caring people.
