Hot topic: New principal at Jefferson

This from a reader:
Our son is starting at Jefferson in the fall, and we just heard that the principal, Victor Tam, is leaving, to be replaced by the principal of Fairmount, Mary Lou Cranna. This makes us nervous, so I'd love to hear some positive feedback on Ms. Cranna. She seems to have done a great job for Fairmount. And I wonder who Fairmount is getting now?

  1. As a teacher at Fairmount who has worked with Mary Lou for the past two years, I can tell you that we are very sad to see her go. She's experienced, positive, warm, and inclusive. She's allowed the teachers to share in decision making. She's made simple, effective changes to our school's daily operations. She's focused on strong instruction and student safety. She deals with issues head on and does not shy away from tough situations. Her replacement has a background in Spanish immersion programs.

  2. Ditto...I am also a Fairmount teacher, and strongly feel that we were lucky to get Mrs. Cranna when we did. She stepped up to the plate!

  3. Where is Victor Tam going? Why is he leaving Jefferson? He is a great principal!

  4. I'm a parent at Fairmount - I have no idea where your old principal is going or why all the sudden Principal changes - but you should welcome Mary Lou with open arms, she will fight for your children and work tirelessly to build upon your strong community. She does not give good tour but what she lacks in presentation style she more than makes up for in dedication and substance. Our loss.

  5. This is off-topic, but when is the EPC posting the 5/28 waitpool online? Anyone know if they're going to be late mailing out letters again?

  6. I have been hitting refresh on the SFUSD website all morning. I'm daydreaming of seeing the list posted, seeing that the whole waitpool (all 15 people) have cleared, then going home and getting my letter tomorrow. Wouldn't that be sweet! Last month it was after lunch b/f they posted so probably the same this month.

  7. Go to the Open Enrollment thread for info on the wait pool posting (it's not good news).

    Who is Mary Lou's replacement?

  10. Mary Lou Cranna is an amazing principal. As a teacher who worked with her at Hillcrest and as a parent of a public school student let me tell you you are lucky.

  12. Victor Tam a wonderful principal??? I would not trust Victor Tam with a school of fish. We had already paid the registration fee at St. Annes when we got the wonderful news that Tam was being replaced. My daughter will now remain at Jefferson. Jefferson was a wonderful school before Tam, and will become that school again I am sure.

  13. "I would not trust Victor Tam with a school of fish." LOL. Gotta admit I was not impressed with him, especially after all the glowing comments I'd heard from friends about Jefferson under his predecessor.

  14. I have been a parent and active PTA member at Jefferson for over 10 years. I have three kids. We were all worried when Mrs. Rosen retired a few years ago. Principal Tam came in and he was spectacular. He is someone who knows good teaching and all the students adored him. He had honor and integrity and held high standards for the school. He had the courage to do what was right for the students. We are going to miss him very much. He took time to get to know the children and the families. He was great.

Jefferson is a good school, but it can be better. I hope Principal Cranna can pick up where Principal Tam left off.

Be careful of some of the kooky parents, like the garden czar. The garden program is run by a man who thinks he great, but he is a bigot. You should see some of his e-mails or hear him at PTA meetings! He is pretty entertaining if you don't take him seriously.

If you can avoid him, it's a pretty good place for kids.

  15. I am in the attendance area for Jefferson and live in the Inner Sunset. My concern with the school is the proximity to 19th Street. Is the traffic noise disruptive to the students? Any air quality concerns? I would like to get thoughts from parents with students enrolled. Thanks!!

  16. Victor Tam is a horrible principal. He doesn't care about the kids. Hope no other schools have to deal with him anymore.

  17. Victor Tam was a great principal. The new one, Mrs. Cranna is a ehhh, ehh... She is good with parents, but POOR with students. She acts as id she cares only when parents are concerned. We as parents at Jefferson need to speak with Mrs. Cranna with our concerns more offen so she knows what she can improve with.

  18. I've only had Victor Tam as a teacher, but saying that he doesn't care about the kids is simply wrong. He was the best teacher I've ever had. He went to great lengths to make sure that I, as a new immigrant, was caught up with the rest of the class. He took the time to talk to my parents to let me participate in extra curricular activities. If there were more educators like Mr. Tam, underperforming schools would be nonexistent.
