Alvarado Auction

This from a reader:
I’m sure you are overwhelmed with fundraiser information, and that school assignments is a much hotter topic at the moment, but wanted to pass on the info about Alvarado’s auction this coming Saturday night.

FWIW, the merchant donations have really stepped up this year. I’m not sure if it’s the auction team, or just the recognition among the merchants how dire the fundraising situation is. For whatever reason, donations this year have well exceeded last year.
Here are the details:

Saturday, March 20, 2010
6:00 pm to 11:00 pm

The Janet Pomeroy Center
207 Skyline Boulevard
San Francisco, CA 94132
Tickets are $26.50, and available at:

  1. Wouldn't it be great if merchants donated to schools that actually REALLY need the $$, the ones whose PTAs do not already earn the huge sums Alvarado brings in. PTA earnings should go in a general pool from which the school doing the work keeps 20% or less. It's not right that some schools' can bring in so much $$ to supplement budget shortfalls and other schools just have to suffer with less staff, no art, etc.

  2. I totally agree. PTAs like Alvarado are bringing in $250,000 or more each year, while we've got schools that are glad if their PTA can raise $50,000 with TONS of sweat equity. I think, at a minimum, that the school district should take into account a school's ability to hire its own teachers in deciding how many teachers to cut from each school.
