Hot topic: SFUSD kindergarten welcome

An SF K Files visitor asked me to start the following thread:
My kid is starting Kindergarten at an SFUSD school and I have heard nothing from her school. No welcome picnic, no getting started packet, no student handbook or policy manual. I have no idea how to get her signed up for school lunches, whether she is supposed to bring a snack, if there will be naps like when I was in Kindergarten, or what she is expected to bring on her first day.

Am I expecting too much? Is this just a problem with our school and others are doing a better job of welcoming and informing new parents?

I mean, everything else we have done with our kids (preschool, summer camp, lessons) has involved some sort of basic 'what you need to know' before sessions begin. I can't believe SFUSD just expects you to wander in on the first day completely in the dark.

  1. That seems unusual to me. My daughter is starting K at Flynn tomorrow and we attended an orientation last weekend. The school orientation was followed by a PTA organized play/snack time in the park. Most people I know attending an SFUSD school have attended some kind of orientation.

  2. I agree - this sounds unusual. My daughter is starting at Rosa Parks JBBP tomorrow and we received a welcome packet with an invitation to a breakfast after drop off tomorrow. It came in the mail 2 weeks ago. There was also an orientation a few months ago. as well as an organized playdate welcome 2 weekends ago.

  3. I would agree that most schools do something ahead of the first day, but those efforts vary. Often they are led by parent volunteers, and if the parent who was in charge of welcomes suddenly bails (or their child graduates) it sometimes takes a while for someone else to step into the job.

I would hope that the principal would always send a letter home with essential info to new K families; it sounds like in your case this didn't happen. If you want to email me the name of the school off-blog at rachelnorton "at" sfusd.edu I can find out why.

  4. I think we may be enrolled at the same elementary school as the original poster because we, too, did not get any information in the mail about the first day of Kindergarten... no meet the teacher event, no summer play dates, no orientation for the kids... no school information packet... nothing. It really made me wonder if we had chosen the wrong school. :(

I feel much better after the first day of school today but the past couple weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions (anger, sadness, bewilderment, anxiety, etc.).
