Jose Ortega park date

I would like to invite those of you who got into Jose Ortega to meet for a park date this Saturday morning (March 21). I would be particularly interested in gathering those families who were assigned to the Jose Ortega GE--even though they didn't list it among their seven schools. If you're interested in getting together, you can email me Kate (who is really Amy) at thesfkfiles@gmail.com. Thanks!

  1. This is a great idea, and I'd love to meet other parents, but Saturday morning 10am-noon is one of the counseling sessions for Round 2. We got into Jose Ortega GE, but didn't put it as one of our choices. (Altho I put Jose Ortega Manderin Imm as a choice)So I will be at this couseling session. Sara

  2. Hi,

I'd like to second the previous comment. Probably lots of us want to get the low down on at the Informational Counseling session at that time.
    Any interest in Sunday date?

  5. Definitely interested. We live across the street from Feinstein, but were assigned to Ortega.

Also 0 for 7, and not happy about the situation considering proximity and work situation.

We are doing the counseling meeting Thursday night, so we are free on Saturday. Happy to do it at another time as well. We would love to meet some others in the 0/7 club in person.

  14. Kate/Amy, I'm a bit confused since I know your child is in the Mandarin program at JOES. However, most of the parents who are concerned here just had their child placed in JOES GE program. Many SF schools have 2 or more programs at one school; it's like two schools on one campus. I'm wondering how we can find out how the GE program is. I know you can vouch for the Mandarin program but it's almost like having a parent talk about Clarendon's JBBP but their child is in Clarendon's (SC).

  15. Hi! The Jose Ortega welcome event on Friday morning is going to have several current GE parents who want to talk to prospective parents about the school. They'll each be giving their story of how they ended up at the school and some of them will be comparing our school to their experience at other public and private schools.

  16. We are 0/7 did not get assigned JOES but now it is on our radar. Are we able to attende the Friday morning session as well? We got Sheridan so we are also going to see that on Friday AM. Just trying to do as much as we can without taking off even more time from work. I know I know same old sob story that all the 0/7s have.

  17. While it will be very important to have JOES GE parents at the event to talk about their experience with that specific program, it is also true at many schools with multiple programs that there is a lot of crossover. The principal is the same, offerings such as art, motor skills, afterschool, etc. tend to cross over, as well as learning supports such a nutritionist, literacy specialists, and so forth. The PTA is usually for the whole school. So it makes sense and is great that Kate and presumably other MI program parents would be supporting this event with their energy along with the current GE parents. This is surely true at Rosa Parks as well.

  18. Hello,
I am a teacher in SFUSD, and my daughter is also a 0/7'er assigned to JOES. From an insider's perspective, I am hopeful. I have heard nothing but great praise for Mrs. Washington (and colleagues are very honest!).
I want to see for myself what Ortega has to offer, and we will also be there Friday. I do suggest, though, going there on a "non-showy-fluff" day. Go visit when you can really see how things operate.
Coming from teaching in one of the lowest performing schools- your child's educational experience is what you put into it. My students that are successful have parents/families that make sure that their children are successful.
    See you Friday!
